About MeeTube

Hey, thanks for taking an interest…

MeeTube.com actually began as an idea somewhere back in ‘06. At the time I was working on my degree in Digital Media and one morning at school I overheard a bunch of people talking about YouTube. While I had heard of it, I really didn’t know too much about it myself (can you imagine?). I think I must have just completed my introductory web courses because despite my ignorance regarding YouTube specifically, I was well aware of the potential value of domain names. With that in mind, as soon as I got to class I punched metube.com into my browser and found it belonged to a pipe supply company. I thought about contacting them and seeing if they wanted to sell their domain but in the meantime punched in meetube as a second choice. Bingo.

I pulled my wallet out right there in class and bought both meetube.com and meetube.net with no real clue what I was going to do with them. In fact, when I saw that all of the meetube domains were available I almost had second thoughts but in the end I figured, what was $20? I bought the domains that morning and basically shelved them for the next two years.

While my primary interest was in web technology, I chose video production as a second major primarily because I wasn’t very interested in 3-D Animation. As I was already a semi-professional musician familiar with audio editing software, I found programs like Adobe Premier and Final Cut Pro a snap to pick up on. Suddenly, video became my number one focus. I loved it…

Naturally, as a performing musician with these new found video skills my first thoughts were of filming myself and my band before anything else. And thus, the seed was planted…

Once I got tired of filming myself (as if) I realized that with video and a broadband Internet connection, any musician now had the power to reach an audience that in the past, required major label support. Immediately I set to work building a makeshift studio in my garage with the plan to film local bands and post the videos on YouTube. When I thought I was ready, I ran an ad in The SD Reader and one of the first bands to respond were glam rockers Cirkus from Uppsala, Sweden. I about crapped my pants.

Anyway, the response I was getting to my little YouTube project, then known as the420channel, forced me to rethink the whole thing. I never did film not one performance in my garage turned studio. Instead, I decided to find a local venue where I could book and tape shows. We ended up at Molly Malone’s in Ramona, CA with good reason. Unfortunately, I’m running out of gas so you’ll have to just take a look at the original 420channel blog if you want more details on that.

Anyway, as the project gained in popularity I began having second thoughts about the name and decided that while I liked it, the project itself was growing in such a fashion that a more… “respectable” brand seemed in order. I racked my brain trying to come up with a new name that I not only liked, but also had the “trifecta” available… That would be the domain, the MySpace and The YouTube. Nowadays, if I buy a domain on a hunch, I automatically set up MySpaces and YouTubes for them. Anyway, not coming up with anything I felt good about, I remembered I still had meetube so I figured, why let it sit? The rest, as they say, is history…

Thanks again for checking out independent music videos on meetube.com.

Rock on!
